Ana, MD + MSc

My name is Ana and I am an expat medical degree graduate living and working in The Netherlands. Since July 2013, this blog has been a place for me to discover living a healthy life and eating healthy food.
What is healthy food?
By majority consensus in the science-backed world of nutrition, plant-based diet is the most beneficial for good health. It is then reasonable that most of my recipes are full of veggies and fruits. Also, most main meals are vegetarian if not vegan/dairy-free, and most desserts have a low glycemic index (high fibre to sugar ratio).
Why do you write recipes?
When I started getting interested in healthy eating, I searched the internet for healthy recipes. What I found was sometimes great, mostly fine, and often awful! A raw mango & onion soup – for starters, and all sorts of recipes labelled as healthy even though they were no such thing.
On this blog, I look at what is actually healthy, then develop that into delicious recipes that don’t hurt my taste buds, as well as look into practical ways of living a healthier lifestyle.
Why did you start this blog?
Back in medical school, I was amazed by the amount of helpful everyday tips we were hearing in class. I thought “this is cool, everyone should know about this”. So I started a blog to share health tips that could benefit everyone who wants to live a healthier life.
Although modern medicine knows a lot, there is still no better way to improve your health than to take personal responsibility for the way you live and eat.
What is your education?
I studied at a respected medical university in The Netherlands, and graduated from two degrees: Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
If you are unfamiliar with Biomedical science – it teaches about medical research, how things are tested and discovered, how to work in a laboratory, how to understand medical science and scientific medical articles.
Can I trust what you write about food?
There are so many foodies and bloggers, and know-it-alls out there telling you and I both what to eat and even what to think about food. I don’t want to be one of them. I blog about health, and nutrition and lifestyle, evidence-based and/or with a grain of salt. There is so much we yet don’t understand about health, and so much we can still improve in health care.
My aim is to help you understand medical science, healthy living and science-backed nutrition.
